With
approximately 3,700 students on campus as the 2009-10 school year
begins, Northeast is experiencing a few growing pains, most
of which begin and end with one thing……parking.
According to campus police/security Chief Dean Bearden, there are
1,700 parking places on the Booneville campus.
Faculty and staff reserved spots make up only 275 of those, while
53 handicap spots are also included.
Obviously, 1,700 is not equivalent to 3,700, but Bearden explained
how a little planning could alleviate most parking problems.
“There are enough spaces,” Bearden said, “just
not enough convenient parking
spaces. Students waste their time ‘cruising’ the boulevard
when they could just park farther away (from their destination)
and use their time wisely by just walking.”
Parking issues are not the only minor inconveniences caused by record
enrollment.
Students have also faced declining book supplies in some subjects,
and longer lines into the cafeteria, but Chief Bearden recognizes
parking will always get the most attention.
“Things will get better where parking is concerned,”
Bearden explained. “Everyone just needs to read the rules
of parking, be early enough to find a parking space (no matter where
it is) and be patient with those who choose to not follow the rules.
That's where campus police and tickets come in.”
