Northeast’s
Baptist Student Union (BSU) is having an event February 18 to help
raise money for summer mission trips.
Entitled The Big Show, the concert features five bands including
four local acts and starts at 6:30 p.m.
Wavorly (Tupelo), The Embrace (Tupelo), Call Me Captain (Booneville),
Hollagram (Tupelo) along with Aaron Hodson (Columbus) will make
up the entertainment list for this event.
Wavorly and The Embrace is full of Northeast alums while Call Me
Captain contains several current students.
Wavorly has not always been called their current name, when Wavorly
members were students at Northeast they were known as Freshman 15.
BSU assistant director Ed Earnest recalled the beginning of The
Big Show.
“Years ago a group of students who met at the BSU formed a
Christian pop-punk band called "Freshmen 15” and thought
it would be a good idea to play a benefit concert to raise money
to help send out BSU summer missionaries,” said Earnest.
“That particular year, Dave Stovall and Matt Lott, both members
of Freshmen 15, served as summer missionaries. In fact, I remember
that their band was really taking off and the folks from AtlantaFest
-- a large Christian summer music festival -- called to try to book
Freshmen 15 that year. The guys told them ‘thanks, but we've
already got summer plans.’ Needless to say, the guys really
believe in this cause.”
Later, Freshman 15 became Wavorly as Stovall and Lott added fellow
Northeast BSU members Jamie Hayes, Seth Farmer and Ryan Coon to
the band’s line up.
This year The Embrace will also take the stage. A couple of the
members, Cody Hickman and Bobby Hudspeth, were very involved with
the BSU in their time in college.
Singer/songwriter Aaron Hodson will be playing at Northeast for
the first time, as well as a side project electronica/dance/rap
group called Hollagram.
A brand new local band, Call Me Captain, will also make their Northeast
debut.
For the year the BSU hopes to raise $22,000 for missions and as
of the beginning of February the group is half way there.
Cost for this concert is $5 at the door.
