MTV’s
Video Music Award (VMA) for Best Female Video of 2009 goes to Taylor
Swift with her video “You Belong with Me.”
This country pop singer beats out Beyonce’s hit single “Single
Ladies (Put a Ring on it)” – which drew an uninvited
rant from Kanye West at the awards’ ceremony as well as topping
Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold,” Kelly Clarkson’s
“My Life Would Suck Without You,” Lady Gaga’s
“Poker Face” and Pink’s “So What.”
Swift’s video is a classic love story. People can fall in
love with someone when they least expect it. Things happen in the
most magical ways and Swift’s sing appears that this country
pop star singer sings about are always about love, falling in love.
Swift and actor Lucas Till are next-door neighbors throughout high
school years. Just like some high school students that are neighbors,
they see each other through their bedroom windows and talk to each
other -- through hand written notes nonetheless, holding them up
for the other one to read.
Swift watches as Till is on the phone with his girlfriend, watching
him as the “cheerleader” girlfriend is yelling at him.
Swift looks at her object of affection him with a look wishing she
could make everything better for him because she does not want to
see him upset. Most females look at guys and think that the only
girls they want to be with are the athletes and cheerleaders, not
the band geeks – Swift’s character in the video -- and
average girls.
Guys want a girl who is “perfect.” Swift looks at Till
so in love but does not realize that all along he is falling for
her too.
In the video, the cheerleader girlfriend dismisses Till off after
the football game for the quarterback on the team – even after
Till’s character caught the game-winning touchdown pass. As
Till walks off dejected, the video pans to the best friends in the
window and Till asks Taylor if she is going to the dance.
She writes, “No, studying” but she ends up going any
way.
When she walks in, Till’s mouth drops as he turns to look
at her. He is stunned by how beautiful she looks and as he starts
walking toward Swift, his ‘cheerleader’ ex-girlfriend
tries to stop him but he blows her off just as she did him at the
game.
Till walks up to Swift and she holds up a paper that says, “I
love you.”
Swift had wanted to show him for a long time but the right time
never came. When she held her note up, he reaches in his pocket
and unfolds a note saying, “I love you” as well.
Till realized that all along, he belonged with her just as she said,
you belong with me.
The video “You Belong With Me” is a great video in my
opinion.
This young upstart country music singer who was born on December
13, 1989 has come a long way in her career. She began performing
in front crowds at age ten. By age fourteen, she was the youngest
staff songwriter for Sony Tree Publishing House in Nashville. Swift,
19, wrote or co-wrote all the songs on her self-titled debut album.
Swift is a young lady with a great head on her shoulders.
This song is a great song because it is about love and when somebody
is in love, one cannot help but to like love songs!
