Hinds spoils Tiger home opener in overtime
On a fair night at Northeast’s Keenum Stadium, the Tigers took on the Hinds Eagles in the season opener and despite a good effort came up short, falling 16-7 in overtime.

Starting the game on defense the Tigers denied all of the Eagles’ attempts to get down the field. Sophomore Bernard Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) continued to put pressure on the Hinds offense leading to a multitude of punts from the Eagles.

On the other side of the ball for the Tigers, the game started slow with minor penalties.

Wide out Chris Smith (Birmingham, Ala.) stepped up and made a 10-yard catch from quarterback Clint Wilson (Olive Branch), who was 28-of-45 for 220 yards on the night.

Tiger running back Jeremy Cannon (New Albany) rushed for 131 yards on 18 snaps.

Northeast only score of the night came when Eric Knowlton (Horn Lake) hauled in a 20-yard pass from Wilson early in the third quarter tying the game at 7-all.

Having to punt the ball multiple times, Tyler Turner (Horn Lake) had an opportunity to sway the game for the Tigers unfortunately the sophomore’s potential game-winning 18-yard field goal was blocked with under 20 seconds to play.

Northeast will next take on Pearl River September 3 at 6:30p.m. in Poplarville.
