MACJC rewards running back for career day

Sophomore running back Jeremy Cannon rushed for 237 yards on 33 carries for four touchdowns on Saturday, October 3rd against the East Central Warriors.

After a career day against East Central Community College, Northeast Mississippi Community College running back Jeremy Cannon (New Albany) was selected as a Player of the Week when the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC)/National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XXIII statistics were released on Monday, October 5.

Cannon, who accounted for all four of the Tigers scores in Northeast’s 34-28 overtime loss to East Central in Decatur on Saturday, rushed for 237 yards on 33 attempts during the Tigers’ three-hour tussle with the Warriors.

Cannon kept Northeast in the game providing the offensive punch for the Tigers by tallying scores from five and six yards out in the first half and broke open a 14-all tie in the third quarter with a two-yard leap with 10:47 left in the quarter.

Northeast took a 28-14 lead with Cannon’s final touchdown of the day when the New Albany native scampered 15 yards for a score with just 3:49 left in the contest.

Cannon became the second Northeast player to earn Player of the Week honors during the 2009 campaign. Defensive back LaDarrius Madden (Colbert County, Ala.) received Player of the Week honors during the third and fifth weeks of the season for his efforts against Itawamba Community College and Holmes Community College, respectively.

With his effort against East Central, Cannon also jumped a spot in the individual rankings in the MACJC/NJCAA Region XXIII standings. Cannon bumped Pearl River’s Rashod Henry from the second spot in individual rushing and now has 833 yards on the season on just 134 attempts. The Northeast sophomore has tallied five scores on the year while averaging 6.2 yards a touch and 138.8 yards a game.

Cannon provides the majority of the Northeast run game – accounting for 138.8 yards of Northeast’s 195.3 rushing yards per game and has 134 of the Tigers 233 rushing attempts on the year. Cannon’s efforts have helped propel Northeast to the fourth-best rushing offense in the state with 195.3 yards per game behind powers Gulf Coast (326.8), East Mississippi (222.2) and East Central (197.6).

Cannon was one of eight players selected for Offensive Player of the Week honors during the sixth week of the year – and joined only East Mississippi’s Pat Shed as running backs in the selection. Four quarterbacks were selected for the honor – East Central’s Emmanuel Taylor, East Mississippi’s Randall Mackey, Itawamba’s Bret Jefcoat and Northwest’s Casey Weston. Two receivers were also picked as Player of the Week for the offensive side of the ball as Northwest’s Michael Lindsey and Itawamba’s Demarcus Watts drew accolades from their performances during the sixth week of the season.

Cannon and the rest of his Northeast teammates move back into North Division play on Saturday when the Tigers trek to Scooba to take on the nation’s twelfth-ranked team -- East Mississippi -- at 2 p.m.
