Northeast
Mississippi Community College Tiger safety LaDarrius Madden from
Colbert County (Ala.) High School was selected as one of the MACJC
Region 23 Defensive “Top Performers of the Week” for
the second time in 2009.
Madden’s
performance in the 25-10 victory over the Holmes Community College
Bulldogs on September 24, at Keenum Stadium, earned him another
spot on the top performers’ list.
The 6-0,
200-pound safety was selected in week three for the same honor after
Northeast’s 28-21 win over rival Itawamba Community College.
Madden finished the Itawamba game with three receptions totaling
for 45 yards, eight solo tackles, two assists, and one interception
that was returned 55 yards for a touchdown.
Madden
turned the trick again in the win over the Bulldogs in week five
by recording seven tackles, three interceptions – returning
one 35 yards for a touchdown -- and a forced fumble for the Tigers.
“Our
defense played great as a unit against Holmes,” said Madden.
“If it wasn’t for the defensive line getting so much
pressure on the quarterback, I wouldn’t have had those interceptions
and we wouldn’t be talking about me getting “Defensive
Player of the Week.”
Madden’s
solid play has been a huge part of the success the defensive of
unit has seen this year, as the Tigers defense ranks third in the
2009 MACJC/Region 23 football stat poll after the week five stats
report.
“LaDarrius
is just a team player and he makes things happen for us on defense,”
explained defensive back coach Chris Shelling. “He is a real
coachable kid and produces every time he steps on the field. The
best thing about him is ......he is unselfish and he deserves to
be recognized.”
Madden
and the Tigers will look to continue their winning ways as they
travel to Decatur to face off against the East Central Community
College Warriors on Saturday, October 3.
Kick-off
is set for 2:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on The Shark
102.3 FM and available as a live stream on the NEMCC athletic webpage
or at http://www.classicradiofm.com/
