Northeast Mississippi
Community College sophomore running back Jeremy Cannon (New Albany)
sits just 23 yards shy of the 1,000-yard plateau as Northeast enters
its final game of the 2009 season Saturday, October 24.
Cannon has racked up 977 yards on the ground this
year on just 176 carries as Northeast enters its season finale against
Northwest in Senatobia.
Coahoma ended Northwest’s hopes at the Mississippi
Association of Community and Junior College (MACJC) state playoffs
after the Tigers defeated Itawamba Thursday night to clinch the
second-place spot in the division 30-20.
Cannon’s season got a major boost during the
Tigers’ week six game against East Central where the sophomore
accounted for 237 yards and all four of Northeast’s scores
in a 34-28 overtime loss to the Warriors.
Cannon may have a chance at the elusive mark when
he faces a Ranger defense that ranks near the bottom in rushing
defense allowing 173.1 yards per game on the ground. Only Itawamba
and East Central are lower in rushing defense than the Rangers are.
Cannon enters Saturday’s contest averaging
122.1 yards per game on the ground and leads a Tiger offense that
averages 176 yards rushing.
Northeast will have to contend with a Northwest
passing attack that has lit up opponents this year. Northwest comes
into the final game of the regular season averaging almost 330 yards
per game through air – 20 more yards per game than any other
team in the state.
Northwest quarterback Casey Weston is coming off
a 27-of-37 performance against Holmes where he racked up 335 yards
and three touchdowns. Weston’s favorite receiver against the
Bulldogs was Michael Lindsey who pulled down nine balls for 118
yards and a score.
Weston, who has been named a MACJC player of the
week seven of eight weeks this year, leads the state in passing
completing 169-of-303 attempts for 2,584 yards on the season and
25 scores through the air.
Weston will have to deal with a tight Northeast
secondary that’s led by LaDarrius Madden (Leighton, Ala.)
and Darius Carothers (Lafayette) who have combined for eight interceptions
on the year for the Tiger secondary.
JaMorris Ricks (Leighton, Ala.), Jerian Cole (Anguilla)
and John Ware (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) along with Joseph Johnson
(Southaven) and Buck Beene (Baldwyn) will lead a Tiger defense that
has caused opponents to turn the ball over 23 times on the season.
Northwest holds a 31-16-2 mark against Northeast
since the two schools started playing each other in 1955 –
including a pair of ties in 1975 (6-6) and 1993 (27-27).
As with all of Northeast’s football games,
Northeast’s game will be broadcast on The Shark 102.3 FM and
is also available as a live stream on the NEMCC athletic webpage
or at http://www.classicradiofm.com/ Kickoff for Saturday’s
contest is set for 2 p.m.
