ATTENDANCE

Please read the official attendance policy in the college catalog. All absences should be due only to school-sponsored activities or unavoidable circumstances such as sickness. Work missed due to unexcused absences will not be made up. The maximum number of absences for evening classes is expected to be 2. Students with excessive absences will  be cut out of class (WV).

Attendance will be checked at the beginning of each class. If you come in less than 20 minutes late and wish to be marked present, you are required to turn in a tardy slip before leaving the classroom. I will have a supply of these in the classroom, or you may use your own paper. You must include name, date, time of arrival, and reason for being late.  Missing more than 20 minutes of a class will be counted as an absence, and no tardy slip is required in this case. Three tardies of less than 10 minutes each will also be counted as an absence.

Hour exams missed due to an excused absence may be made up on make-up day (immediately before finals). A written excuse must be submitted at that time. Although makeup exams may differ from those given at the scheduled time, it is your responsibility to leave the classroom while the class is going over returned papers for an exam you missed.

WITHDRAWAL POLICY

You may drop classes any time in the first 2 weeks. Beginning in the third week, you may withdraw at any time until just before finals. See me for a withdrawal form.

OBJECTIVES

The student will develop an understanding of the general concepts and principles involved in the science of microbiology and an appreciation of the role played by microorganisms in the world of living things. The student will learn to apply concepts learned in class and especially in the laboratory to daily life. The student will develop competence in differentiating various types of microorganisms, develop safe habits of working with and handling microorganisms, and demonstrate knowledge of basic laboratory procedures.

METHODS OF MEASURING OBJECTIVES

The objectives will be measured by the ability of the student to reveal an understanding of material covered with at least 70 %  accuracy on teacher-made tests.

GRADING

Grading will be on a 10 point scale. You will receive one grade which will be determined as follows:

50%---hour lecture exams  (4 with NO DROP GRADE)  +  possible bonus points

   20%---lecture final exam

30%---lab (a separate handout will explain how lab grades are determined)

The following material will be covered:

   1st hour exam--- Ch 1, 3, 4

   2nd hour exam---Ch  5– 7

   3rd hour exam---Ch  10 – 12

   4th hour exam—Ch  8, 9, 13, 14

   Final exam—15 – 26 plus comprehensive questions

In addition to scheduled hour exams, short bonus tests will be given in lecture. (Bonus tests are like pop tests but sometimes you will know they are coming!) If you are present and do well on these, bonus points will be added to your final lecture exam average. No points will be taken away from your lecture average due to these bonus tests. Bonus tests will not be made up.

Please keep a record of your grades. I do not do averages until all work is complete.
