TEXTS: MICROBIOLOGY AN INTRODUCTION by
Tortora, Funke & Case
(9th Ed.)
ATTENDANCE
Please read the official
attendance policy in the college catalog. All absences should be due only to
school-sponsored activities or unavoidable circumstances such as sickness. Work
missed due to unexcused absences will not be made up. The maximum number of
absences for summer classes should be 2. Students with excessive absences will be cut out of
class.
Attendance will be checked at
the beginning of each class. If you are late, be sure to check in with me
before leaving the classroom. Missing more than 10 minutes (lab or lecture)
will be counted as an absence.
Hour exams missed due to an
excused absence may be made up on make-up day (immediately before finals). A written excuse must be submitted at that
time. Although makeup exams may differ from those given at the scheduled
time, it is your responsibility to leave the classroom while the class is going
over returned papers for an exam you missed.
WITHDRAWAL POLICY
You may withdraw any time
until shortly before the final. The Dean of Instruction sets the last day to
withdraw. If you are unable to complete the course, please be sure to withdraw
properly.
OBJECTIVES
The student will develop an
understanding of the general concepts and principles involved in the science of
microbiology and an appreciation of the role played by microorganisms in the
world of living things. The student will learn to apply concepts learned in
class and especially in the laboratory to daily life. The student will develop
competence in differentiating various types of microorganisms, develop safe
habits of working with and handling microorganisms, and demonstrate knowledge
of basic laboratory procedures.
METHODS OF MEASURING
OBJECTIVES
The objectives will be
measured by the ability of the student to reveal an understanding of material
covered with at least 70 %
accuracy on teacher-made tests.
SCANTRON SHEETS
Students must bring a large
Scantron sheet for each hour exam and one for the final. Two small Scantron
sheets will also be needed, one for the final and one for the first lab
quiz. These may be purchased at the
bookstore. Students who fail to comply with this will not be allowed to take
exams and there will be no makeups for this reason.
GRADING
Grading will be on a 10 point
scale. You will receive one grade which will be determined as follows:
50%---hour lecture exams (4 with NO DROP GRADE) plus quiz grade
20%---lecture final exam
30%---lab (a separate handout will explain
how lab grades are determined)
The following material will
be covered:
1st hour exam--- Ch 1, 3, 4
2nd hour exam---Ch 5– 7
3rd hour exam---Ch 10 – 12
4th hour exam—Ch 8, 9, 13, 14
Final exam—15 – 26 plus comprehensive
questions
Short quizzes will be given
frequently, covering material from the previous lecture. However, I will not
give a quiz on the same night as a lecture hour exam.
Please keep a record of your grades. I do not do
averages until all work is complete. I
will post hour exam grades and Scantron lab quiz grades on Blackboard.
