ATTENDANCE

Please read the official attendance policy in the college catalog or student handdbook.  All absences should be due only to school-sponsored activities or unavoidable circumstances such as sickness. Work missed due to unexcused absences will not be made up. The maximum number of absences for MWF classes will be 8 and for TR classes will be 6, WITH LAB AND LECTURE ADDED TOGETHER. Students with excessive absences will  be cut out of class.

Attendance will be checked at the beginning of each class. If you come in less than 10 minutes late and wish to be marked present, you are required to turn in a tardy slip before leaving the classroom. I will have a supply of these in the classroom, or you may use your own paper. You must include name, date,  time of arrival,  and reason for being late.  Missing more than 10 minutes of a class will be counted as an absence, and no tardy slip is required in this case. Three tardies of less than 10 minutes each will also be counted as an absence.

Hour exams missed due to an excused absence may be made up on make-up day  (immediately before finals). A written excuse must be submitted at that time. Although makeup exams may differ from those given at the scheduled time, it is your responsibility to leave the classroom while the class is going over returned papers for an exam you missed.

WITHDRAWAL POLICY

You may drop classes any time in the first 2 weeks. After that, no withdrawals allowed until the 9th week. If you are cut out due to excessive absences, a grade of F will be recorded. You must withdraw before the deadline to have this F changed to a W, otherwise the F will remain on your transcript.

OBJECTIVES

The student will develop an understanding of the general concepts and principles involved in the science of microbiology and an appreciation of the role played by microorganisms in the world of living things. The student will learn to apply concepts learned in class and especially in the laboratory to daily life. The student will develop competence in differentiating various types of microorganisms, develop safe habits of working with and handling microorganisms, and demonstrate knowledge of basic laboratory procedures.

METHODS OF MEASURING OBJECTIVES

The objectives will be measured by the ability of the student to reveal an understanding of material covered with at least 70 %  accuracy on teacher-made tests.

SCANTRON SHEETS

A pencil is required for all hour exams and lab quizzes. Students must supply their own Scantron sheets. You will need 6 large sheets and 2 small sheets for this course..  These may be purchased at the bookstore. Students who fail to comply with this will not be allowed to take exams and there will be no makeups for this reason.

   20%---lecture final exam

30%---lab (a separate handout will explain how lab grades are determined)
