SURPASSES $2 MILLION GOAL January
14, 2003 BOONEVILLE, Miss.-- Donations to Northeast Mississippi Community College's "Pledge
for Excellence" capital campaign went over the top in 2002, Kenneth
Williams of Corinth announced today. According
to Williams, who served as chair of the fund drive, the first in the history of
the institution, the campaign surpassed the $2 million goal set for 2002. Williams announced to a group of individuals involved in the volunteer campaign that a total of $2.2 million was raised IN 2002. He acknowledged the chair of a variety of committees instrumental in raising the funds and introduced his campaign leadership team. Jim Lamb of Booneville is employee division chair; Danny Dilworth of Rienzi, board division chair; Thomas Keenum of Booneville, lead gifts chair; Ronald Michael of Booneville, advanced gifts chair; Mark Tapp of Booneville, major division chair; and Earline Woods, tours committee chair. "With budget cuts hitting all of Mississippi's 15 two-year schools, this private fund drive has been very timely," Williams said. "More community colleges across the nation are turning to fund-raising as an important source of revenue as state budget, the primary source of funding for two-year public colleges, continue to tighten. "It
should not be A surprise anyone that this campaign was a success," Williams
added. "It's hard to imagine a
community college that his more progressive, more involved in the community more
dedicated to meeting the educational vocational needs of the community that
Northeast." Northeast President Charles W. Chance said, "the college's excellence has been established thorough its history of service, success and solvency. It is with this history and with a vision for the future that Northeast has successfully completed the initial year of its first capital campaign." Patrick Eaton, executive director of the Northeast Development Foundation, gave credit to Williams and the committees he formulated for the campaign. "Kenneth Williams is an extraordinary individual who leads a very demanding professional career. He is a strong leader in numerous civic, volunteer, and philanthropic activities. "He embraced the idea of a major gifts campaign when he served as charter president of the Development Foundation Board and was willing to accept the role as general campaign chair. He put together an exception group of community leaders to carry forward the goal of the campaign." Northeast's campaign generated funds needed to provide scholarships for the purpose of recruiting and retaining talented students, to provide opportunities for advancement in the fine arts, to ensure campus development and to enhance the campus library. Planning stages for the campaign began in April 2001 with a feasibility study of approximately 45 Northeast Mississippi community leaders, board members, and administration, faculty and staff. The study provided Northeast with resource information, preliminary cultivation of prospects and recommendations necessary to prepare for and carry out the proposed major gift drive.
In
May 2002 the College announced a $ 2 million fund drive, the first in school
history, to be used for student scholarships, campus development, and a fine
arts complex. "Our
goal to accommodate the college's most immediate needs was $2 million by the end
of 2002," Eaton said. "Our
goal to accommodate the college's long term needs is to double that and to raise
a total of $4 million in the next four years. "With
this $2.2 million dollars, we are well on our way to obtaining that goal."
