CORINTH MAN ATTEMPTS $100 FIELD GOAL

Steve Strickland of Corinth (l) misfired slightly on a 20-yard field goal attempt worth a $100 cash prize at halftime of the Northeast Tiger/Holmes Bulldog football game at Keenum Stadium September 24.  Strickland’s name was drawn at random to try the field goal as part of the Northeast Development Foundation’s in-game promotions.  At the Tigers’ battle with Holmes, the Foundation worked in conjunction with Northeast officials to promote the college’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).  QEP is a faculty driven initiative which allows the institution to focus on an issue that will impact student learning.  Each institution applying for accreditation or renewal of accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) is required to develop a QEP.  At Northeast the focus of Northeast’s QEP is reading, which was selected  by the faculty and staff, based on institutional research and  widespread participation of Northeast’s constituencies.  The title of the QEP is Reading R.O.A.R.S. (Raising Our Academic Reading Success).  Next week during a three-day visit to Northeast, an SACS committee, which is made up of peer professionals, will spend time on the main campus in Booneville, as well as the Corinth and New Albany campuses.  It will examine data and conduct interviews to asses the educational strengths and weaknesses of the institution and evaluate the soundness of the school’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), the newest component of the accreditation or re-accreditation process.

NEMCC FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES THE W.E. YANCEY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Booneville, Miss.--The Northeast Development Foundation recently received a $110,000 estate gift from Mr. W.E. Yancey, a recently deceased Tippah County Farmer and shoe factory worker that valued the college.

Although Mr. Yancey never got the opportunity to attend Northeast himself, he wanted to develop a scholarship so that others may have an opportunity to do so.

His wish was made into reality at the formal presentation on Thursday June 9th at Fred Permenter’s law office on the square in Ripley.

Northeast Development Foundation Executive Director Patrick Eaton and the Northeast Executive Vice President Dr. Larry Nabors were presented with a check from the Yancey Estates in front of the Tippah County Courthouse in honor of the late W.E. Yancey.

Eaton and Nabors both expressed their gratitude to the Yancey family for Mr. Yancey’s generous contribution to Northeast in Thursday’s meeting.  “It is amazing that he donated this money to Northeast and never even walked through the doors,” said Eaton.

“Mr. Yancey was a graduate of Piney Grove High School in 1945 and was the schools Valedictorian,” explained his nephew, David Yancey.

“My uncle was a well respected, upright, honest, and caring man in the Pine Grove community. He worked hard throughout his life and always gave advice to the youngsters. Visiting him throughout my childhood brought me a lot of knowledgeable advice through the years. As he sat in his recliner, time after time, he told me how he wished he had the opportunity to attend college when he graduated from high school. He continued to be a great role model for myself and many others over time. It is a great honor for our family to witness his generosity in establishing the W.E. Yancey Scholarship Fund to provide a better future for graduates today. He would be very proud to witness this unfold himself, and to see the accomplishments of youngsters who will benefit from the W.E. Yancey Scholarship Fund and Northeast,” Yancey said.

W.E. Yancy was never married and had no children.  W.E. Yancey’s niece Karen Yancey said that he told her one time about the two things he wished he had done different in his life, he wish he would have went to college and that he would have some day got married.

“He said he never really had the opportunity to go to college but he hoped by leaving this scholarship fund money behind, that someone would now have that opportunity he never got,” explained Mrs. Yancey.

Plans are being made to provide the scholarship to a Pine Grove High School graduate for 2010.  A separate application will be required in order to be considered for the W.E. Yancey Scholarship.

TIGER DEN COFFEE CLUB MAKES DONATION TO SCHOLARSHIP FUND

BOONEVILLE, Miss.--  Members of the “Tiger Den Coffee Club” recently made a $1,000 donation to the David Carnell Scholarship Fund at Northeast Mississippi Community College.

“We are very appreciative this group set the bar high by donating $1000,” Northeast head softball coach Jody Long said.  “I’m very thankful for any donation from $5 to $5,000.  Without groups like this coffee club an idea would remain just that, but gifts like this make ideas reality.”

The Coffee Club also gave an additional $400 to fund two scholarships for the 2009 fall semester.

The David Carnell Scholarship Fund was established in honor of a man who dedicated over 30 years of his professional life to Northeast athletics.
Before taking over the women’s softball program in the 1990s from Millard Lothenore, Carnell was a successful football coach and later served as the college’s athletic director after the retirement of long-time Northeast football coach and athletic director Bill Ward.  Carnell registered 24 years on the football sidelines in North Mississippi. The veteran football coach helped establish the football program at Biggersville High School before coming to Northeast in 1972.  The award will preferably go to a Northeast softball player with a specific need.

However, it was on the softball diamond where Carnell found success.  Carnell guided the Lady Tigers to the 2003 Div. II National Tournament in Fort Dodge, Iowa in only their third year of fast-pitch competition.  During the 2003 season, Carnell was honored as the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) Region 23 Division II Coach of the Year.  Carnell wrapped up his career as head fast-pitch softball coach in 2005 amassing a 152-86 record in only five fast-pitch seasons.

NORTHEAST’S FOUNDATION OUT PERFORMS THE NATIONAL AVERAGE

BOONEVILLE, Miss.--  A national survey conducted recently by the The Chronicle of Philanthropy  revealed an increase in the nation’s wealthiest foundations assets and giving in 2007, and according to officials with the Northeast Mississippi Community College Development Foundation, it outperformed even the national average.   The study found that foundations assets rose 4.6 percent in 2007, and grant making by foundations rose by 8.4 percent.  During the same time assets of the Northeast Development Foundation rose by 7.3% and grant making increased by 11 percent.   “We are very pleased that we were able to increase the amount of the Foundation’s assets,” explained Patrick Eaton, executive director of Northeast Development Foundation, “especially when we realized we out performed the national average.  But, more importantly with the increase in assets means more available funds for Northeast and the students we serve.”  On the heals of its first ever Major Gifts Campaign, which had a goal of $4 million, the Foundation raised over $5.5 million.  Foundations never know what the following year will bring after concluding a capital campaign.  The 2007 Northeast Development Foundation annual report indicates another great year of giving to the Foundation.  Over $700,000 was given and designated for scholarships, endowments, general academic needs and building improvement projects. “We are very fortunate to have so many individuals and businesses that truly love Northeast,” Eaton said. Also included in the Foundation annual report are many impressive statistics on the Foundation’s growth for 2006 and 2007, as well as analysis of how it occurred.  More important, it illustrates the growing needs for Northeast and how the Foundation donors are working to meet those needs.  Eaton said while the information given accounts for only a small portion of Northeast’s large impact in providing higher educational opportunities in northeast Mississippi, everyone involved can take great pride in the achievements that are highlighted. Northeast’s Foundation offers a comprehensive program of giving opportunities and is specifically responsible for gifts to the college involving estate planning, real estate, insurance, endowments, annuities, trusts, pooled income funds or other special donations that require ongoing management or binding agreements.  It exists to serve Northeast by providing programs and benefits not fully provided by other sources. For more information about Northeast’s Foundation contact Eaton at 662- 720-7165 or dpeaton@nemcc.edu.  Visit the Northeast web site at www.nemcc.edu.

TVA GRANT AIDS NEMCC DIVISION--  Northeast Mississippi Community College’s Engineering Technology Division purchased a large format plotter/engineering copier with funds received through a $5,000 grant from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).  The machine provides the programs in the Engineering Technology Division an avenue to produce a high quality, technically advanced print for classroom and laboratory project.  The Northeast Development Foundation partnered with TVA and awarded the supplemental funds needed for the purchase through a Venture Grant.  The partnership with the Foundation and TVA helped the college take another step in the race to keep pace in the ever changing technological world.  Pictured is (l-r) construction engineering technology instructor Ray Gaillard, machine tool and die technology instructor Mike Snowden, Northeast Development Foundation executive director Patrick Eaton, electrical and electronics technology instructor William Johnson, landscape management technology instructor Jim Tidwell, engineering technology division head Linda Sweeney, industrial maintenance technology instructor Jimmy Whitehead and machine tool and die technology instructor Stevie Lovelace.
