COURSE TITLE AND NUMBER: Machine Transcription BOT 1513
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to teach the student to transcribe a wide variety of business communications from machine dictation and to introduce the student to products, services, and terminology encountered in various types of business organizations. The coordination of keyboarding and transcribing skills in the production of business communication will be emphasized. A review of the language arts skills of punctuation, spelling, editing, proofreading, and vocabulary is stressed.

TEACHING METHODS: Lectures/demonstrations will be given on Monday to cover the instructions for the week. Additional information will be presented at the beginning of class on Wednesday and/or Friday as necessary. Additional instructions may be written on the board. Turn-in time will be Wednesday by or before 2:50 p.m. for the previous week's work.
The student's reference manual will serve as a main source of instruction/information thus encouraging the student to find answers for him/herself.
GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES: The student will be able to:
1. Transcribe material at an acceptable rate in "mailable" form.
2. Use a variety of manuals to find information.
3. Use self-discipline to best utilize time and to prioritize work.
SPECIFIC COURSE OBJECTIVES: After completion of this course, the student will be able to apply the following competencies:
1. Demonstrate proper utilization, maintenance, and care of transcription audio technology:
a. Maintain headsets for safe and hygienic operation.
b. Develop proper technique for foot-pedal control.
2. Employ proper techniques of transcription to produce mailable business documents:
a. Proofread for grammatical and contextual errors.
b. Use appropriate reference materials.
3. Proofread accurately for grammatical and contextual errors.
4. Improve language arts skills including spelling, grammar, usage, and style.
5. 5. Fill in sentence gaps left by the person making the recording.
6. 6. Transcribe at a skill level adequate to meet state employment testing.

EVALUATION: The majority of the grade will be derived from daily practice in class; therefore, good attendance is crucial. All work missed must be made up outside of class. A minimum of two written/performance tests plus a final exam will be given. Any test missed during the semester will be made up only if the absence is unavoidable. Make-up tests will be given during activity period during the week prior to final exams.
Completed week's work will be accepted early--but not late. Turn-in time will be consistently set for each Wednesday--by or before 2:50 p.m.
