
With a total of 141 knockouts, boxer Archie Moore holds the professional knockout record. Moore has been considered one the greatest and most dedicated boxers of all time.
Archie Moore, nicknamed "Ole Mongoose," was born on December 13, 1916, in Benoit, Mississippi. Moore spent most of his childhood growing up the St. Louis area, where he and his family survived the Great Depression. According to fellow boxers and friends, Archie was a lively, determined, and sympathetic man.
In addition to holding the professional record for his total of 141 knockouts, Archie Moore was the only boxer to fight both Muhammad Ali and "Rocky" Marciano. Moore fought for an astounding 27 years and faced many talented challengers. He fought some of boxing’s top fighters, including nine world champions. At the age of 39, Moore became World Light-Heavyweight Champion when he defeated Joey Maxim. He held the title for eight years. In 1961, Moore knocked out Pete Rademacher and lost only one of five fights against Jimmy Bivens. Archie fought a total of 229 bouts and won 194 of those bouts.
Moore retired in 1963 but remained active in boxing as a trainer. In 1990, Moore was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Archie Moore died December 9, 1998, in a San Diego hospice facility due to heart disease complications.
With such incredible accomplishments, Archie Moore is certainly worthy of recognition as one of Mississippi’s famous sports figures.
