 John Lee Hooker

 

On August 22, 1917,  a genuine blues superstar was born. John Lee Hooker, also known as the "Hook," is a native Mississippian who became a star when the Detroit blues took the world by storm.

While still in his teens Hooker moved to Memphis. Due to the lack of attention his music  received, he relocated to Cincinnati for seven years. But, in 1943, Hooker made the move to Detroit, Motor City.  in search of more jobs. In 1948 he made his debut album "Boogie Chillen" with his solo "Sally Mae." This debut put Hooker on the R&B charts and his career was off and running. By 1989 Hooker shared a Grammy with Bonnie Raitt for best traditional blues recording for their album "I’m in the Mood".

In 1991 Hooker was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Hookers’ next album "Chill Out’ was released in February 1995 and won the 1996 Grammy for Traditional Blues. On November 7, 1996, Hooker was awarded the Blues Foundation’s 2nd annual Lifetime Achievement Award.

Hooker enjoyed a good life throughout the 90’s spending most of his time in  semi- retirement just relaxing and enjoying several houses he had bought on the California coast. John Lee Hooker died of natural causes on the 21st of June in 2001.  John Lee Hooker was an American musical icon.
