"Oil Can" Boyd was a legendary major league pitcher. He played ten
seasons. In those seasons he played on three different teams and recorded
seventy-eight wins and seventy-seven loses. He pitched over 1300 innings in his
major league career. Oil Can struck out 800 batters and only allowed 1400
hits in ten seasons. And best of all he only gave up 166 home runs. He also
pitched in the 1986 World Series.
Oil Can was born on October 6, 1959 in Meridian, Mississippi. He went to Meridian High School then attended Jackson State University. The Boston Red Sox drafted the right-handed pitcher in 1980. In Oil Can’s career he played eight seasons with the Red Sox and then was traded to the Montreal Expos where he played one season. After that season he was again traded, this time to the Texas Rangers for one season. After that season he was placed back in the Expo organization where he ended his career in 1991.
When Oil Can quit playing in the majors, he started playing in the Independent Leagues where he played for 7 more years. Now Boyd is trying to develop his own team and stadium. He recently has tried to build a stadium in Baldwyn, MS. Oil Can has had a successful career and still helps young pitchers with their game.
