Tammy Wynette is called "The First Lady" because she was the first female country act to sell one million albums. By 1989 she totaled 39 top ten hits, 20 number one singles, 11 number one albums, and more than 30 million dollars in record sells.
Virginia Wynette Pugh was born on May 5, 1942, in Itawamba County, Mississippi. In 1959, only a month before her high school graduation, she married Euple Byrd. In 1961 she gave birth to a daughter named Gwen and the following year another daughter named Jackie. In 1963 she enrolled in a beautician school in Tupelo, Miss. In 1965 she gave birth to another daughter named Tina, shortly before divorcing her husband.
Virginia moved to Nashville and auditioned for Billy Sherrill at Epic Records. Billy Sherrill changed Virginia Wynette Pugh’s name to Tammy Wynette, and she released her first single "Apartment #9".
In 1967 Tammy married Don Chapel, and in ’67 received a Grammy for her number one hit "I Don’t Wanna Play House". The next year she got a divorce from Chapel and "Stand By Your Man" became a number one hit.
In 1969 Tammy married George Jones and in 1970 her daughter Georgette was born. From 1971 to1975 Tammy and George recorded numerous hits together and in 1975 she divorced Jones.
In 1976 Tammy marries and divorced Michael Tomlin, and she also recorded several hits such as " Til’ I Can Make it On My Own".
In 1978 she married George Richey who became Tammy’s manager and the next year she published an autobiography named Stand By Your Man. In 1980 Tammy recorded her final duets with Ex-husband George Jones. In 1986 Tammy joins the cast of CBS soap opera Capitol, and later in "86 she had to go to the Betty Ford center to treat her addiction to prescription pain medication.
In 1992 Tammy created international hit sensation "Justified and Ancient" with the KLF. This song was number one in 18 countries. Tammy also demanded an apology from Hillary Clinton after a disparaging remark about "Stand By Your Man".
In 1994 Tammy released her last album, Without Walls. Tammy Wynette passed away in her sleep on Monday, April 6, 1998.
