Theora Hamblett , one of many famous artists from Mississippi, is known for
painting beautiful pictures of nature, but what made her famous is how she
painted. All of her paintings are painted from a child’s point of view.
Theora was born in Lafayette County on January 15, 1895. She attended school
in the small town of Paris. As a child, she loved to draw landscapes and other
scenes from nature. After Theora finished school, she became a teacher and
taught for over fifteen years, in a small one to two teacher school. In 1939,
Theora moved to Oxford, where much of her income was made renting rooms in her
house to college students.
Theora enrolled in an art class at Ole Miss in 1950. This class, taught at
night, was her first training in art. Theora Hamblett’s artwork made
her famous by her death in 1977.
