  • Course Description:

This course is intended to fulfill social science requirements for both transfer and terminal degree programs.  It is designed to provide the student with a general background of the development of the social sciences and their research technique.  It also provides specific knowledge on sociological terms, concepts, and their application.

 

  • Course Objectives:

The student will be able to:

    • develop a working sociological vocabulary
    • identify some of the major individuals who contributed to sociology’s development
    • demonstrate knowledge of the various types of methodology used in sociology
    • recognize the various problems inherent in research in human groups
    • recognize the part that values play in cultural interactions
    • participate in role playing activities
    • assess anxieties associated with change
    • recognize the various types of communication patterns
    • determine the best course of action for dealing with particular groups
    • become aware of the various theories of deviancy
    • perceive the different ways of interpreting culture
  •  Class Guidelines:

Attendance:  MWF classes:  the student WILL be cut out on the 6th absence

                         BLOCK classes:  since each class lasts for 2 class periods, one           

                         missed day equals 2 absences.  You will be cut out after your 2nd

                       absence (which will equal 4 class periods).

Tardiness:       Should be avoided at all cost.  Please do not enter class if you are more than 5 minutes late.  Tardiness are noted in attendance.

 

Make-up Policy:  All work is due on the day it is assigned.  One letter grade will be deducted for each day papers are late.  If you are out, you may send your assignment with someone else or e-mail it to me.

 

Tests will be made up on 2 days throughout the semester.  Failure to attend one of these days will result in a 0.  These tests will not be administered the same as they were on the original test day.  It is to your advantage to take the test on its assigned day!!

  • Course Requirements:

You will be assigned a discussion topic at the beginning of each chapter.  These are simple questions that can be answered by using your text.  They are due on the next class meeting.  If all 9 are completed, you will get a drop grade.  There is no drop grade for students who do not do the discussion topics.

 

There will be 5 tests consisting of 2 chapters each, with the exception of the last chapter. 

 

The final exam is comprehensive and taken from previous notes.

 

Special attention is paid to the fact that you take and use YOUR own notes.  Copies or the use of someone else’s notes ARE not acceptable.

 

**You must supply your own scantrons for exams.  You will need approximately 6 for the semester.  They may be purchased in the NE bookstore for .10 each.
